Logs are place in the creek so they extend approximately 3/4 across the creek just below the water
surface. Either they are driven into the bank or the bank is excavated and the log is place in the
excavation and backfilled. Several root balls were also placed. The object of all this is to create scour
pools behind the logs which make better salmon spawning grounds. Latter trees and shrubs will be planted
next to the creek and shade the creek and cool it down to be more comfortable for the aforementioned
salmon.
The log project is not an integral part of CREP- CREP does the tree/shrub planting. The log project was
funded by a grant from North Olympic Salmon Coalition with technical assistance and project management
by Jefferson Co. Conservation District. Work was done by Ray McDonald and Dick Shold (McDonald
Excavating/Tri Area Contracting)
